Shreveport Launch — June 27, 2026

A Night of History,
Community & Remembrance.

The official Shreveport launch of Small Town Rage: Fighting Back in the Deep South on June 27, 2026, became a community-wide celebration spanning three iconic downtown venues: Central ArtStation, the Korner Lounge, and Central Station. Survivors, activists, allies, friends, and community members gathered throughout the evening to celebrate both the publication of the book and the history it preserves. The event served as a powerful reunion for many whose lives were forever shaped by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the fight for dignity, compassion, and justice in Northwest Louisiana.

The evening began with the formal book launch at Central ArtStation, where former ACT UP Shreveport members, friends, and supporters reflected on the movement's enduring legacy and the importance of preserving its history. Following the formal program, attendees remained well past the scheduled conclusion, sharing memories, reconnecting with old friends, signing books, and reflecting on experiences that, for many, had not been discussed together in decades. The celebration then continued at the Korner Lounge before moving to Central Station, where Small Town Rage was recognized during performances by Lady Fat Kat and Sarina Styles. Conversations, reunions, and celebrations continued until nearly 2:30 the following morning, transforming the book launch into an unforgettable citywide gathering.

Interest in the book exceeded expectations, with more than 125 copies sold during the evening's events. One of the most meaningful moments came when ACT UP Shreveport surprised author Dr. David Hylan with a special award recognizing his commitment to documenting and preserving the history of ACT UP Shreveport and the many individuals whose courage, activism, compassion, and sacrifice shaped the organization's legacy. The award acknowledged the years of work required to research, write, and share a story that might otherwise have been lost, ensuring that the experiences of those who fought through the AIDS crisis in Northwest Louisiana would be remembered by future generations.

The launch became far more than a book event. It was a homecoming, a reunion, and a remembrance. It brought together people who had stood beside one another during one of the most difficult chapters in the community's history while introducing new audiences to the extraordinary legacy of ACT UP Shreveport. By the end of the night, it was clear that Small Town Rage had become more than a book. It had become a catalyst for reflection, healing, and renewed appreciation for the people whose determination changed the course of history in Northwest Louisiana.
